Energy Storage

We're seeking battery and supercapacitor solutions for extreme-temperature stratospheric applications as part of our MeteoSonde pico balloon platform.

Project Overview

Energy storage is critical for our pico balloon platform's ability to operate through night cycles and periods of reduced solar input. Standard lithium-ion batteries fail at stratospheric temperatures, requiring specialized solutions that can maintain capacity and charge/discharge capability at extreme cold.

Requirements

RequirementSpecification
Operating Temperature-65°C to +40°C with usable capacity (critical: low-end performance)
CapacityMinimum 50mAh at -40°C
Mass ConstraintUnder 5 grams total
Cycle Life500+ cycles minimum
ChargingMust charge at low temperatures

Technologies of Interest

  • Low-temperature lithium chemistries (LTO, specialty Li-ion)
  • Supercapacitors and ultracapacitors
  • Solid-state batteries
  • Hybrid storage solutions
  • Novel low-temperature energy storage approaches

Ideal Vendor Profile

  • Documented performance data at extreme low temperatures
  • Experience with aerospace or scientific balloon applications
  • Ability to provide small quantities for R&D testing
  • Technical support for integration
